The Old Dominion University Research Foundation is seeking a Lab Technician to perform work through the Nitrogen and Carbon Biogeochemistry group. This team member will conduct image analyses and sampling in support of ongoing projects centered around harmful algal blooms. This lab maintains one of the longest running phytoplankton monitoring programs of its kind and is seeking to modernize taxonomic identification and training with advanced imaging technologies. Ongoing work involves collaborations with regional, state and federal partners. Preference will be given to applicants experienced with operating newly developed imaging systems including: FlowCam, Imaging Flow Cytobot, and PlanktoScope to generate image libraries. Applicants that have experience using advanced computing techniques to train datasets will be given preference.
Education and/or training: Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Oceanography, Environmental Science, Ecology or equivalent experience
Level and type of experience: 2 years in a related position
Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities: experience in operating FlowCam, IFCB, and PlanktoScope; experience using EcoTaxa
Other: The ability to work safely in a laboratory environment. Organizational skills. Some degree of phytoplankton taxonomic training
