Summary

The ODU Research Foundation is seeking a Senior Software Developer to perform work through the Old Dominion University’s Office of Enterprise Research and Innovation (OERI) and The Virginia Digital Maritime Center at Old Dominion University.  We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to support the Digital Analytics (DA) team in advancing the maritime workforce and supporting Naval sustainment challenges through the development and implementation of data and predictive analytics tools. This position involves collaboration with academic institutions, small businesses, and military organizations to foster economic growth and drive innovative solutions in the maritime sector. The role emphasizes managing software projects and leading research initiatives in optimization and modeling, aligned with the team's future goals.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Research and Development: Collaborate on research and development projects, including grant writing, data analysis, and publication of findings. Oversee the design, development, and implementation of software solutions for data analytics and predictive modeling.
  • Project Management: Manage a variety of research programs and projects, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget. Lead the management and maintenance of digital tools and simulations relevant to the Center’s research areas.
  • Collaboration and Coordination: Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, industry partners, and funding agencies. Foster collaborative partnerships to support project goals and drive economic growth.
  • Software Project Management: Oversee the development and maintenance of software applications and tools to support the Center’s research and projects. Ensure best practices in software project management to deliver robust, scalable, and maintainable solutions.
  • Mentorship and Supervision: Mentor and supervise graduate and undergraduate students as well as other team members involved in research projects.
  • Dissemination of Findings: Contribute to the dissemination of research findings through conferences, workshops, and publications. Prepare reports, presentations, and other documentation required by funding agencies and stakeholders.
  • Optimization and Efficiency: Lead initiatives aimed at optimizing various operations through advanced modeling and simulation techniques, enhancing workflows, resource allocation, and overall efficiency.
  • Infrastructure Management: Drive the optimization of various infrastructures through energy modeling and other management strategies, enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and resilience
  • Innovation and Integration: Integrate best practices and lessons learned from traditional operations with cutting-edge technologies to drive continuous improvement and innovation within the industry.
  • Minimum requirements:  M.S. with 5+ years experience in Modeling and Simulation, Applied Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.  Strong background in quantitative analysis, modeling, and simulation. Familiarity with relevant software and programming languages (e.g., Python, R, JavaScript and related frameworks) to effectively manage software development projects.  Experience in academic and industry research, with a focus on maritime and supply chain applications preferred. Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.   Strong background in quantitative analysis, modeling, and simulation. Familiarity with relevant software and programming languages (e.g., Python, R, JavaScript and related frameworks) to effectively manage software development projects. currently holds or is eligible for Secret Clearance

    Preferred qualifications: Strong applicants will have a background in web development and development of data-driven applications.  Experience with cybersecurity, digital transformation, and AI/ML applications in maritime or related industries.

    Position requires a high degree of variability of duties. Proven track record of managing funded projects, with strong organizational and project management skills.  Must be able to exercise independent judgment in decision making.  Must have experience in supervising and mentoring students or junior researchers.
