Lab Specialist

Summary
Full time position in a water quality laboratory. Perform analytical procedures following SOPs and documented methods, including preparation for field sampling and wet chemistry for various nutrients and water quality parameters. Conduct fieldwork on boats in Chesapeake Bay in various weather and sea conditions. Overnight travel. Previous field experience preferred but not required. Requires B.S. or equivalent in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or related field.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Participation in field sampling events as field technician and Chief Scientist.
  • Preparation for field sampling events
  • Performs wet chemistry and instrumental laboratory work
  • Learns the maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs and calibration of several complex field and laboratory instruments shares with other analysts
  • Conducts data quality assessments (DQA) and performs peer review of all data generated
  • Perform necessary computer work.
  • other duties as assigned. 

Education and/or training: Requires B.S. or equivalent experience in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or related field.

Level and type of experience: Entry Level Position. Previous laboratory work- college lab courses qualify for this. One year of college chemistry

Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities: A science degree with one year of college chemistry. Ability to work on boats and in the field.

Other:

  • Ability to swim- safety reasons for going on a boat.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to travel overnight

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Prior field and laboratory experience particularly if in a nutrient laboratory or on research vessels

Special licenses, registration, or certification:

  • None required, but if worked in a NELAC certified lab
