Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join our dynamic research team at Old Dominion University- Department of Biological Sciences. This position offers an exciting opportunity for a recent Ph.D. graduate to further develop their skills and expertise in biomedical sciences within a collaborative and supportive environment.

Job Responsibilities:
The postdoctoral researcher is expected to contribute to research in the fields of vaccinology, immunology, and intracellular pathogens. This position is funded by a grant from the Virginia Commonwealth Health Research Board (CHRB) to develop vaccines against tick-borne diseases.   • Plan, conduct, and analyze in vivo T-cell epitope mapping and vaccine immunogenicity experiments and in vitro immunogenicity assays to include T-cell ELISpots, ELISAs, and flow cytometry.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and correct records in accordance with laboratory guidelines and contribute to the maintenance, upkeep, and cleanliness of the laboratory and experimental samples.
  • Author manuscripts that result from this work. 
  • Prepare presentations explaining results.
  • Supervise and mentor the daily activities of the undergraduate researcher/s working on this project.
  • Participate in weekly lab meetings and journal clubs, attend departmental seminars, meet individually with the PI at least once every 2 weeks, assist with lab management activities.

Education and/or training: PhD 

Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities:            

  • Knowledge of mouse handling techniques.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture, specifically primary T cell culture.
  • Knowledge of and experience with immunology and in vitro immunogenicity assays, such as ELISpot, ELISA, flow cytometry.
  • Experience planning and conducting experiments, maintaining appropriate records, and communicating findings.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience with mouse handling, including RapID system, facial vein bleeding, immunizations, spleen harvesting & processing for cell culture.
  • Knowledge and experience in vaccinology, including ELISA and T-cell ELISpot techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience in cloning and recombinant protein production.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with intracellular pathogens, specifically Listeria.
  • Experience in laboratory management (inventory management and procurement assistance).
  • Successful experience mentoring undergraduate researchers.

PhD in microbiology, immunology, or a related field.
