Summary

Old Dominion University Research Foundation is seeking a Community Interventionist that has experience with youth advocates and individuals with relevant life experiences whose role is to help youth and young adults transform attitudes and behaviors around violence. They serve people whose needs go far beyond the traditional mentoring approach of companionship, confidence-building and typical academic, social or career guidance.

 

Ideal candidates will have the ability to connect with the most challenging youth and are expected to provide individualized mentoring, skill building, and support to high-risk individuals and their families using a trauma-informed and strength-based approach. Job responsibilities will be in close coordination with other program staff and guided by Individualized Service Plans. After hours and weekend work is required.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Conducts group and individual mentoring sessions, provides educational and career mentoring, social and emotional support, serves as an accountability partner to participants.
  • Meets and observes project participants reporting any individual issues, such as social, behavioral, or disciplinary problems to project staff.
  • Assist project participants with articulating their goals for success, helping them to monitor their own progress and modeling effective coping techniques.
  • Assist project participants with securing transportation to attend all scheduled classes, events, and appointments
  • Recommends and/or provides project participants emotional and mental health programs, job training, financial literacy and guidance, life skills, family support, and educational mentoring.
  • Complete all administrative tasks associated with project participant services.

Minimum requirements: Two years’ experience in community outreach or engagement. High School Diploma or GED

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Knowledge of underrepresented and under served communities.
  • Active Listening — Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times
  • Speaking — Talking to others to convey information effectively
  • Critical Thinking — Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
  • Social Perceptiveness — Being aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  • Judgment and Decision Making — Considering the relative costs and benefits of potential actions to choose the most appropriate one.
