Position Number:25-054
College or Other:COLLEGE OF SCIENCES
Department:PHYSICS
FT/PT Status:Full Time

Summary

The Department of Physics at Old Dominion University (ODU) seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a theory of nonequilibrium superconductivity under strong electromagnetic field.

Applicants must have a PhD in physics or applied physics with a background in condensed matter and superconductivity. Applicants with experience in the Keldysh technique, kinetic equations and their numerical simulations are especially encouraged to apply.

The successful applicants will join a theory group of Dr. Alex Gurevich working on electromagnetic response of superconductors at low temperatures with applications to superconducting accelerating cavities and high-Q resonators for quantum information technologies. The successful candidate will also be affiliated with the ODU Center for Accelerator Science and collaborate with experimental groups at Jefferson National Laboratory. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal up to three years conditional upon satisfactory performance.

Education: PhD in physics, applied physics or related field required.

Experience: Experience in the superconductivity theory.

Specific knowledge: Ability to perform numerical simulations using Matlab, Python, C++ and other computer languages.

Knowledge of the Keldysh technique, experience in solving time-dependent Usadel equations and kinetic equations of superconductors preferred.

Duties include: Developing a theory of nonlinear electromagnetic response of superconductors at low frequencies and temperatures.

Writing computer codes for the calculation of nonlinear surface resistance.

Collaboration with the experimental group of Pashupati Dhakal at Jefferson Lab.

Other as assigned.
