Summary
The Learning Engineer supports the design, development, coordination, and evaluation of curriculum, instructional systems, and learning experiences across research, education, and workforce development initiatives. This role operates at the intersection of learning sciences, instructional design, and translating complex concepts into structured, scalable learning solutions. The position contributes to projects spanning K–12, higher education, and maritime training environments, including technology-enabled and experiential learning contexts. Responsibilities include developing instructional materials, aligning learning objectives with competencies, supporting research-informed training interventions, and coordinating with interdisciplinary teams. The Learning Engineer also supports outreach, program implementation, and continuous improvement efforts, ensuring that learning experiences are aligned with organizational goals, stakeholder needs, and evolving workforce demands.
Job Responsibilities:
Design, develop, and refine curriculum, instructional content, and multimodal learning materials (e.g., digital modules, simulations, hands-on activities, instructional guides) across educational and training programs.
Coordinate and support implementation of VDMC educational and training programs, workshops, and outreach initiatives for diverse audiences, including expanding engagement and partnerships.
Lead and coordinate instructional design efforts across projects, aligning learning objectives, competencies, and assessment approaches.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams (researchers, developers, educators, subject matter experts) to ensure alignment between content, technology, and learning outcomes.
Support integration of instructional strategies within research and evaluation activities, contributing to study design and data-informed improvements.
Contribute to project coordination, including timelines, deliverables, and documentation.
Support proposal development and dissemination activities (reports, presentations, educational materials) through instructional design input and educational planning.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Learning Sciences, Curriculum/Instructional Design, Education, or a related field.
3-5 years' experience in curriculum development, instructional design, or education/training program.
Knowledge of instructional design principles and learning theories, ability to translate concepts into structured learning experiences, experience working collaboratively in team-based environments, strong organizational, communication, and coordination skills, ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities across projects.
Ability to work across diverse educational contexts and with varied stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with technology-enhanced learning environments (e.g., simulations, digital tools), familiarity with competency-based education and workforce training models, understanding of assessment and evaluation methods for learning outcomes, knowledge of maritime, manufacturing, and/or technical trades environments.
Master’s degree in Learning Sciences, Curriculum/Instructional Design, Education, or related field.
5-10 years' experience supporting research, grant-funded projects, or workforce development programs.
