Postdoctoral Researcher - Monarch Innovation

Summary

This postdoctoral researcher will be embedded in the Office of Technology Commercialization within the Division of Research & Economic Development at ODU. They will work directly with faculty and staff on the evaluation of their intellectual property to support commercialization and technology development, help develop and implement new internal processes for the evaluation and management of university IP, and support education and training programs for faculty, staff, and postdocs. 

Job Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate university technologies and work directly with faculty and staff to assess intellectual property strengths and commercial viability and develop appropriate strategy recommendations
  • Assist Office of Technology Commercialization staff with the deployment of education and training programs for faculty, staff, and postdocs related to intellectual property and commercialization
  • Work with Office of Technology Commercialization staff to evaluate, develop, and implement new IP evaluation and management processes to enhance experience for faculty and increase efficiencies
  • Attend startup ecosystem events and professional development training for technology transfer to increase ODU’s presence in the region, expand professional network, and stay current on tools and skills in the field
  • other duties as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • PhD in a STEM discipline

Experience

  • 3–5 years of graduate-level research experience in a STEM field

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong scientific literature review and analysis skills, with the ability to assess technical merit and potential applications
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences
  • Familiarity with intellectual property concepts and/or intellectual property databases
  • Demonstrated interest in technology commercialization, innovation, or applied research translation
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, work independently, and maintain a high level of organization and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

Education

  • PhD in biological sciences, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, or a closely related field

Experience

  • 5+ years of graduate-level research experience
  • Authorship of multiple articles in peer-reviewed journals
  • At least 1 year of experience evaluating or assessing intellectual property, preferably within a university technology transfer office (e.g., R1 institution)

Skills & Abilities

  • Experience using intellectual property databases  
  • Experience supporting or developing processes related to technology evaluation, commercialization, or research translation
  • Experience coordinating or supporting training programs, workshops, or in-person events
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders, including faculty, staff, and trainees

This position is being filled through the Research Foundation, which is a separate entity from Old Dominion University (ODU). While we work in support of ODU, the Research Foundation operates independently and is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.
