Summary

This Research Assistant position involves working to help understand and address youth substance use in K-12 school settings with a focus on scholarship (scientific presentations, publications, and grant applications) and youth interventions (alternatives to suspension treatments administered via computer or in-person). The position is located at the Division of Community Health and Research within the Department of Pediatrics in Eastern Virginia Medical School, Old Dominion University.

Job Responsibilities:

Research Coordination

  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with the IRB, community members, research partners, study participants, and internal team members to support study operations.
  • Coordinate and facilitate activities related to IRB approval, participant recruitment, abstract submissions, manuscript preparation, and grant submissions.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure timely completion of research deliverables and compliance requirements.

Scientific Communication and Scholarly Writing

  • Communicate research activities and findings effectively through written materials and oral presentations, including scientific abstracts, manuscripts, reports, and presentations.
  • Apply sound judgment in supporting research-related decision-making, problem-solving, and prioritization of tasks.
  • Contribute to the preparation and review of scholarly products for publication and dissemination.

Community-Engaged Research Implementation Support

  • Under the direction of the Project Director, support implementation of community-engaged research activities.
  •  Prepare study materials, tools, and resources for research activities.
  • Work directly with community partners and groups to carry out the project work plan and support engagement activities.

Education and/or training: Bachelor’s degree in social science (or similar)

Level and type of experience:

Experience conducting literature reviews as part of academic coursework or research training.

Exposure to research activities such as assisting with scientific presentations, manuscript preparation, or grant writing support.

Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of basic social science research methods, including literature review techniques, participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, and data presentation.
  • Ability to support scientific writing, including drafting, editing, and formatting research materials.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team-based research environment.
  • Basic proficiency with organizing and summarizing research information.

Preferred qualifications:

Master’s degree

Experience in counseling or tobacco treatment.

Education or training in data science, child development, or pediatric training.

Co-authorship or first author on scientific presentations or publications

This position is being filled through the Research Foundation, which is a separate entity from Old Dominion University (ODU). While we work in support of ODU, the Research Foundation operates independently and is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization.

Final salary offers may vary depending on factors such as experience, qualifications, skills, internal equity, and budget availability.

Expected range $18-$25 dollars an hour.
